What is a Keto Diet?
Short for Ketogenic, the Keto diet refers to a way of eating that is high in fat, low in carbohydrates, and includes enough protein to meet our human demand for adequate nutrition.
When consumed, carbohydrates are converted into sugar in your body. These sugars then enter the blood stream, and as your blood sugar levels rise, your pancreas releases a hormone called insulin.Â
The main purpose of insulin is to lower your body’s blood sugar levels. This process has an endless list of adverse health effects, including an increased risk of heart disease, poor metabolic health, weight gain, and an increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes.
The problem with carbohydrates is that they are extremely difficult to eliminate from our diets, seeing as they’re in almost everything. We can, however, keep our sugar and carbohydrate intake as low as possible – and that starts with reading labels.
